Classroom Champions Loves Flipgrid for Social and Emotional Learning!

Darri Stephens

Flipgrid, the popular and FREE video discussion platform from Microsoft, has long been loved by teachers and classrooms far and wide. And this year, Classroom Champions is jumping on the bandwagon by using the intuitive tool to help strengthen students' relationships with their virtual athlete mentors throughout the school year in our Mentorship+ SEL Foundations Curriculum program.

STEP 1: Go to www.Flipgrid.com and click the blue EDUCATOR SIGNUP button in the upper righthand corner. Choose to use your Google or Microsoft email to begin your account creation. Read Flipgrid's Getting Started blog article if you need more support.

STEP 2: Next, create a grid by clicking the red ADD NEW GRID button on your dashboard. Consider 1 grid/classroom as the home base of sorts. You can limit access to your grid with your students by email or using their student IDs. They do NOT need their own accounts; instead you will share a "Flip Code," which you can personalize.

STEP 3: Now create a topic, or many, by clicking on the red ADD NEW TOPIC button. Topics are your reflection prompts. You can attach links, images, and videos (maybe record a video prompt!). You also can find topic templates and prompts in Flipgrid's Disco Library. You can add an unlimited amount of topics to a grid. Within each grid, you also can ADD COPILOTS if you want to have another teacher as a collaborator and contributor. Don't forget to set your GRID NOTIFICATIONS if you want to know when others add their video responses to your grid.

STEP 4: Click SHARE to share the Flip Code, link, or QR code with the rest of your learning community. Within a grid, you can ADD TOPIC GUESTS if you'd like to share with your students' families as well.

Now the fun begins — your students will record and share their own video response to your prompt. All students on a grid will be able to watch and learn from one another at anytime, in or outside of the classroom.

Flipgrid has long been loved by fans of flipped learning, as teachers have found that the platform encourages ongoing conversations outside of the school day and school walls. Flipgrid is a key tool to increase engagement for virtual learning scenarios too. Plus, it supports students with varied learning styles — especially those who may be a bit reticent to share their thoughts in group settings or for those who like to "talk to think."

Classroom Champions + Flipgrid

For over ten years, Classroom Champions has been pairing classrooms virtually with elite athlete mentors to help students develop key social and emotional learning (SEL) skills. Yet this year, we are leveraging the power of Flipgrid's video discussions within Classroom Champions!

STEP 5: For this school year, we are creating a personalized grid for each and every classroom/athlete mentor match (see our recent reveal of the 2020–2021 Athlete Mentors). For teachers and schools taking part in our Mentorship+ SEL Foundations Curriculum program, they will receive an email with a special Flip Code to access a shared grid. Their dedicated mentor athlete then will use this grid each and every month to send personal update videos to the students.

Students, in turn, can respond back via video and ask questions of their athlete mentor — a new-age pen pal exchange! The Flipgrid platform will strengthen this special relationship between the kids and their athlete mentor, allowing them to build their bond further before and after their two live video chats (part of the Mentorship+ offering). Can't you just imagine the meaningful exchanges that will happen?
